LiftMaster Torsion Spring Replacement: The Woodland Hills Owner’s Guide

We stock and install torsion spring replacements compatible with LiftMaster garage doors every week in Woodland Hills, and a full spring swap typically runs $180 – $340 installed depending on spring size and whether we’re replacing one spring or both. Most LiftMaster torsion spring failures show up as either a door that won’t lift more than a few inches or a loud bang from the garage that sounds like a dropped barbell. You’ll have a written price from us before any work starts, and in more cases than not we can get your door moving again the same day you call.

Which LiftMaster Models This Applies To

LiftMaster doesn’t manufacture garage doors themselves. The name on your opener is LiftMaster, but the torsion spring system above your door is typically made by a door manufacturer that LiftMaster pairs with. That matters because spring sizing follows the door’s weight and height, not the opener model. Regardless of which LiftMaster opener you have, from a basic 1/2 HP chain drive to a wall-mount 8500W, the torsion spring replacement process is the same: identify the door’s spring dimensions, match wire gauge and coil count, and install a spring rated for that door’s specific lift cycle.

The quickest way to identify what you need is to read the color-coded paint stripe on the spring itself. LiftMaster system springs use the same industry-standard color coding as any residential torsion spring: red, gold, blue, green, and so on, each corresponding to a wire gauge and expected cycle life. If the paint has faded, we measure the wire diameter, inner diameter, and overall length on site. One thing we see in Woodland Hills often: homeowners who’ve had a door replaced but kept their old LiftMaster opener assume spring specs carry over. They don’t. Every new door gets its own spring match.

Signs Your LiftMaster Torsion Spring Is Failing

  • The door opens a few inches and stops. The motor runs and the belt or chain moves, but the door stays down. That’s the opener trying to lift a door the spring can no longer counterbalance. The spring still looks intact from the outside; internally, it’s lost tension.
  • A visible gap in the coil. Look at the torsion tube above the closed door. If you see a separation in the coil where the spring has snapped into two pieces, that’s a clean break. This is the most obvious sign and usually comes with the loud bang.
  • The opener sounds like it’s straining. A healthy LiftMaster opener on a balanced door has a steady hum. When the spring is on its way out, you’ll hear a slower, heavier grind as the opener does more work than it was ever designed for.
  • The door feels heavy when you release the emergency pull. With the door disconnected from the opener, it should feel roughly weightless at the halfway point. If it drops or takes both hands to lift, the spring isn’t storing the energy it used to.
  • One side sits higher than the other. A failing spring often throws the door off balance, leaving it cocked slightly in the track. That’s the door telling you the lift force is uneven before it gets worse.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Woodland Hills, a LiftMaster-compatible torsion spring replacement runs $180 – $340 installed. The spread comes down to spring grade: a standard spring rated for roughly 10,000 cycles lands on the lower end, while upgraded high-cycle springs built for 20,000 to 25,000 cycles push the higher end. If we replace one spring, we always inspect the second. They usually wear evenly, and replacing a single spring on a two-spring door leaves you with a mismatched pair that fails again sooner.

Every quote includes the spring or springs, labor, a full balance test, and re-lubrication of the system. The price is written down and agreed to before we touch a tool. No surprises, no “while we were in there” add-ons. And the work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the spring fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

Torsion springs hold an enormous amount of stored energy, even when the door is closed. The winding and unwinding process is where people get seriously hurt. A spring that slips during adjustment can break a wrist or send a winding bar through drywall, which is exactly why we don’t give step-by-step instructions for winding torsion springs here. What you can safely do is visual: check the spring for a visible gap, look for rust around the coils, and note whether the door balances when released from the opener. Past that, this is a job for someone with the right bars, the right training, and the right respect for the equipment.

If you’re reading this with a broken spring and a car trapped in the garage, call us at (341) 888-6519. Jaylen Ross has been working garage doors across LA long enough to have seen every failure mode a torsion spring can offer. Tell him what the door is doing wrong and he’ll tell you exactly what you need and what it costs before a truck ever rolls.
